Preventing Eye Problems

March 7th, 2009

You have probably read many articles of how fish oil benefits your health. Did you know that people who eat the most fish tend to have the fewest eye problems? Studies have concluded that the benefits of fish oil when consumed via servings of fish, extend to two serious eye conditions.

  1. Age-related macular degeneration.
  2. Dry eye syndrome

Macular degeneration is the disruption of the center of the retina, the fine nerve net at the back of the eye which is essential for all fine visual tasks. Macular degeneration is the leading cause of age-related blindness.

People think  how could fish oil protect my eyes from age-related macular degeneration? The reasoning could be that a  component of fish oil is docosahexaenoic acid — DHA for short. It’s one of the omega-3 fatty acids linked to other fish oil benefits of health. Oddly enough, DHA builds up  near light-sensing nerve cells within the eye.

Dry eye syndrome is when a person’s eyes do not make enough tears.  This could lead to scarring of the cornea and ultimate vision loss.

All in all we continue to discover how fish oil benefits our bodies in different ways!
