Fish Oil Supplement in Europe vs USA

March 7th, 2009

fish-oil-supplementAccording to sources, most patients from the cardiac care unit of an Italian hospital which survives a heart attack from the hospital goes home with a prescription for purified fish oil, or an  omega-3 fatty acid supplement.  According to Italian doctors, it would be borderline malpractice to omit the drug.

In a large number of studies, prescription fish oil has been proven to improve the survival after heart attacks and the reduction of fatal heart rhythms.

In the United States, heart attack victims are not generally given omega-3 fatty acids, even as they are offered other more evasive procedures such as  pills to lower cholesterol or implantable defibrillators.

Prescription fish oil is not even approved by the FDA to be used in patients who have suffered heart attacks. Most cardiologists are not giving omega-3’s to the patients even though there is data that supports it.  There is trully a disconnect.

It is imperative that if you are not eating enough fish if any, then you should consider taking a  fish oil supplement.
